Burgas Municipality is implementing the project BGENVIRONMENT-2.003-0003-C01 “Implementation of marine waste reduction measures in the Bay of Burgas”, funded by the European Climate Change Programme (ECCP) of Financial Mechanism of European Economic Area (FM of EEA) 2014-2021.

The main purpose of the project is to ultimately improve the ecological status of marine waters in the Bay of Burgas by raising public awareness, self-awareness making citizens responsible for the reduction and prevention marine litter.

Some more specific goals of the project are:
  • Reduce the amount of waste in marine environment from the territory of Burgas Municipality originating from the land;
  • Increase the capacity of the local administration by introducing measures for waste management and implementation of local environmental ordinances;
  • Raise the self-awareness of the local community about responsible uses of resources, and protect marine waters by increasing environmental knowledge.
Project activities: ♦ Implementation of 4 initiatives for marine pollution reduction: 1. Floating Waste Cleaning Initiative – the seawater in the Bay of Burgas, Kraimorie and Sarafovo will be cleaned using special devices, mounted at three ports; 2. Cleaning Seabed Waste Initiative – in partnership with the “Friends of Sea” NGO, Burgas; 3. “Fishing for litter” initiative – a boat competition for the local fisheries community; 4. Implementation of the “Plan for Limiting the Use of Disposable Plastic Products in the Buildings and Premises of Burgas City Council and Municipal Administration”. ♦ Developing and conducting awareness-raising and educational campaigns: 1. Organizing 2 awareness-raising campaigns to promote the planned initiatives for reduction of marine pollution; 2. Development and implementation of 3 educational campaigns regarding the sources of pollution and the possible ways of reducing or preventing them, focused on 3 different target groups: students, fishing community, local administration.

The planned activities aim to raise the awareness of the local community related to the ecological status of the Black Sea and promote behavioral change and active involvement in various initiatives and policies related to environmental pollution protection.

Expected outputs:
√ Reduction of the amount of waste in the Bay of Burgas through initiatives for cleaning the marine environment;
√ Conducted educational and information campaigns aimed at prevention and reduction of waste in the marine environment.
